Chapter 1

Once upon a time there was a kingdom hidden away in a deep valley behind very high mountains. This kingdom was called The Valley of Less and the high encircling mountains were called the Mountains of More.

This little kingdom had been cut off from other kingdoms for such a long time that no-one living there now had any idea there was more to the world beyond the Mountains of More. There were tales that told of giants striding over the Mountains of More and there were ruins of large buildings scattered among the mud brick cottages. So the tales of giants could have been true. The main proof that larger people had lived there, lay in the huge Castle of Less. It loomed over the whole valley with turrets that were lost in the clouds and endless walls that stretched behind a moat of green slim.

The people called themselves Lessites and were ruled over by the King and Queen of Less called His Most High Less and Her Most High Less. All the children were called Princes of Less and Princess of Less or Lessings. It had been a happy valley with the Lessites occupying themselves in farming and the age-old customs handed down from their ancestors…
